WHY I PREFER STAINLESS
STEEL COOKWARE TO CONVENTIONAL NON-STICK COOKWARE
Most of us have gotten
used to aluminium pots because they are affordable. If you are like me, then
you will rather by non-stick pots and pans than the sticky ones. Key advantages
of non-stick cookware include less fat and easy clean-up. Most non-stick pots
are anodized.
Anodization can be done
in two ways. The most common way is to coat the pots with a black substance
(commonly known as polytetrafluorethylene, PTFE) to prevent the surface of the
pot from sticking to anything. PTFE is made from a synthetic chemical which is
toxic when consumed. The other way (the traditional way) is to increase the
oxide layer of aluminium surface, thereby reducing the chances of aluminium
leaking into the food especially at high temperatures. This explains why
traditional aluminium pots were heavier.
Both methods of
anodization is aimed at preventing excess aluminium getting into the food
because it is toxic, can acidify foods and is linked to alzheimer’s diseas and
other degenerative diseases. Now here is my problem:
1.
Today’s
aluminium pots are not anodized. Meaning we are likely to consume a lot of
aluminium per year.
2.
This can be
avoided by using aluminium pots coated with the black PTFE materials. The
problem is that this surface can easily flake, giving us double exposure to the
aluminium and the toxic black coating.
3.
If you are
fortunate like me and have domestic servants who are bent on doing the opposite
of what you told them, then be prepared to have the anodized coating of your
pots scraped off every day. I have changed my spoons to wooden and plastic
spoons and I don’t have any iron sponge in my house but they still find a way
to scratch the pots.
4.
Please note that
once your anodized pot has the smallest wound, it will start sticking to foods
and that is when you should change the pot. But most of us ignore it for years
and we complain of repeated illnesses caused by acidic foods.
For these reasons, I
decided to invest in one stainless steel pot in 2013. I found it hard to
convince my husband to get one but I am happy I did. I noticed stainless steel
pots are naturally non-stick. And even if my domestic servants decide to find a
way to scratch my pots, there is no potential harm. I have bought 3 additional
stainless steel ever since and I am at peace. I bought the Longrich ones that
have additional features of keeping your food fresh, harmonizing the natural
energies in your food and maintaining the freshness in your food. I have no
regrets.
Let us work together to
live healthy. Let us work together to practice preventive healthcare, reject
toxic substances being dumped on us everyday! We are better than this! We are
bigger than this! We are oneNigeria!.
